Overview

Project Independence empowers people with intellectual disabilities by bridging the transition from family support to independent living. Founded in 2012 by Glenn Keys AO, it has grown to support over 25 residents across three homes in Canberra and is expanding interstate. Through an innovative home ownership model, it provides private units within supportive communities, fostering autonomy, life skills, and social connections. The program’s "try before you buy" approach builds confidence, prepares participants for home ownership, and creates opportunities for education and employment, all while prioritising well-being for individuals and families. Project Independence marks a long-overdue step forward in including people with disabilities in the conversation about affordable and accessible housing, offering a transformative approach to social housing.
