Furnishing Homes, Restoring Hope: How ReLove Is Changing Lives

In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, safe housing isn’t enough. That’s the message from ReLove, a Sydney-based organisation that’s created a free furniture store model for people moving into emergency and transitional housing. Demand has never been higher.

Over the past year, ReLove has seen a surge in requests for support, particularly among women and young people. Seventy-five percent are women, many of whom have experienced homelessness or domestic and family violence, and 40% are First Nations. Around 70 percent of the people they help are under 25.

ReLove offers more than beds, couches and tables. It partners with hotels, corporates and the relocation industry to rescue quality furniture at scale and give it a second life. By pairing this with an efficient referral system and strong agency relationships, ReLove makes sure people have what they need the day they get their keys, including day-to-day furniture and dignity.

For co-founder Ren Fernando, the Snow Entrepreneurs program has been pivotal.
“We started out as a voluntary organisation. Snow Foundation believed in us early and helped us move to a funded model, which meant we could employ people and scale our impact. We’re now furnishing homes across the city and beyond, making a real and lasting impact for people in need.”

The wraparound support has also made a lasting difference.
“What makes this program so powerful is the people. The shared learning, the mentoring, the practical workshops, it’s all underpinned by this incredible community of changemakers. I’ve found collaborators, advisors, and lifelong allies through the Snow Entrepreneurs program.”
“Sometimes it’s just the power of being able to share our struggles with each other. We’re always looking out for one another, always beating the drum for each other. It really feels like one big family.”

ReLove now forms part of a broader network of purpose-driven organisations, working together to help people recover, rest, and rebuild. She recommends the program to up-and-coming social entrepreneurs.
“If you’re looking to build something that’s about real change, you should absolutely apply,” Ren said. “You’ll be surrounded by people who believe in what you’re doing and want to help you succeed.”
